850mmL x 1140mmH / Charcoal On Paper

Idol Pursuits is a large scale, collage style work on paper.

Sourcing its imagery from consumer/social media and the artists own selection of objects, this monochromatic work imagines a pictorial space where these polished consumer products and decrepit historical fragments are crushed into compositional conformity.

Investigating idealised notions of masculine identity, Idol Pursuits contrasts the hyper pristine with the historical fragment, presenting icons that signify both prestige and the inevitability of deterioration.
Collectively forming a dialogue that explores how materialist desires might inform male identity and how such influences may fragment or even erode ones perception of self.

Artist Statement

Roman Longginou uses charcoal to create large-scale drawings that investigate idealised notions of masculinity.

Placing focus on the pictorial, the artist appropriates visual imagery found in journals, films, social media and magazines that are associated with virility throughout popular culture.
Using icons of masculinity that signify prestige and power, Longginou works form a dialogue that explores how materialist desires might inform male identity and how such influences may impact ones perception of self.
