HERMAN MILLER X HAY

Kindred Spirits

Several years ago, Herman Miller approached Rolf and Mette Hay, co-founders of Danish design house HAY, with a flexible provocation:

What could the two design companies do together that they could not independently?

The answer: a fresh take on furniture originally designed by Ray and Charles Eames.

A Legacy Built On Creative Partnership

In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, the Danish design house HAY thoughtfully reimagines eight Eames classics for a new generation of modern design enthusiasts.

Fresh eyes see new possibilities for classic Eames designs, including a bold new colour palette and updated materials.

From Charles and Ray to Mette and Rolf, a beautifully interconnected story of design partnership brought to life in a first-of-its-kind collaboration, Herman Miller X HAY.

Thoughtful Reimagining

To Mette Hay, the challenge was both inspiring and daunting: “I went to the archives to look for something that could put me on the right track.

I thought at first it was going to be too difficult, but it would be more terrible to miss the opportunity… It felt like a big ask to touch something that is so untouchable,” she recalls.

“Then l remembered looking at this amazing Alexander Girard textile called Jacob’s Coat with Tony Manzari and Mary Murphy at the Maharam design studio years back,” Mette continues.

“It had pink, orange, and turquoise, and I was like, ‘Why is this not in production, I love it!’

A little while later, I saw a Sofa Compact in the same textile in a museum collection, and it inspired us to link the colours to the Eames Shell Chair.

Then we added colours from the HAY palette and ended up with what we have today.”
